In medieval Europe, society was divided into three Estates: the clergy, the nobility, and the commoners. Over time, these evolved into the three branches of government in England\u2014legislative, executive, and judicial\u2014which our own system later adopted. British writer Edmund Burke famously observed that \u201cthere were three Estates \u2026 but in the Reporters Gallery yonder, there sat a fourth Estate more important far than they all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n


A healthy democracy rests on four essential estates: the legislative, executive, judicial branches\u2014and a free press. At Oklahoma Watch<\/em>, we honor our individual donors as part of that critical Fourth Estate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
