{"id":723893,"date":"2022-09-08T06:01:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-08T11:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oklahomawatch.org\/?p=723893"},"modified":"2022-09-15T10:17:36","modified_gmt":"2022-09-15T15:17:36","slug":"mexican-consulate-in-oklahoma-city-pushed-to-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oklahomawatch.org\/2022\/09\/08\/mexican-consulate-in-oklahoma-city-pushed-to-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Mexican Consulate in Oklahoma City Pushed to 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When a Mexican diplomat mentioned the \u201cpotential future opening\u201d of a consulate last week in Oklahoma City, someone in Oklahoma City Community College interrupted him briefly with a quiet \u201cwoo!\u201d and fist pump.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambassador Carlos I. Giralt-Cabrales then held up his right hand and said, \u201clet me be very clear. If everything goes well, it\u2019s a very good chance that next year we will have an office in Oklahoma.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019ve learned something from my friends in the United States who say \u2018you don\u2019t count your chickens before they hatch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Giralt-Cabrales, the newly appointed consul general of the Mexican consulate in Little Rock Arkansas, spoke to a gathering of about 100 people at OCCC. We have to deal with the systems of two different countries, personnel, equipment \u2014 many things,\u201d Giralt-Cabrales said. \u201cSo please, Mexican community, be patient.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oklahoma\u2019s Mexican community has been advocating for a consulate for 30 years now. Last year, its members sent over 4,000 letters to Giralt-Cabrales\u2019 predecessor as part of an initiative by Hispanic-focused organizations requesting a consulate in Oklahoma City or Tulsa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oklahoma City Community College has a high rate of Hispanic enrollment \u2014&nbsp; 69% at its main campus and 100% at its Capitol Hill campus \u2014 making it a suitable location for a Mexican consulate, said Robert Ruiz, the director of external affairs at OCCC and primary host of the Aug. 31 event.
