{"id":751844,"date":"2025-10-13T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-13T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oklahomawatch.org\/?p=751844"},"modified":"2025-11-19T20:36:49","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T02:36:49","slug":"drummond-takes-mulready-to-task-over-homeowners-rates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oklahomawatch.org\/2025\/10\/13\/drummond-takes-mulready-to-task-over-homeowners-rates\/","title":{"rendered":"Drummond Takes Mulready to Task Over Homeowners Rates"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-custom-everlit-iframe-embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Everlit Audio Player\" src=\"https:\/\/everlit.audio\/embeds\/artl_8Kw5rCdN63P?client=wp&amp;client_version=2.6.0\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80px\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n<p>On Aug. 12, Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1Y2mUjOgUmsWAfhYvDHEbd64Gi91ERCD7\/view?usp=sharing\">scathing letter<\/a> to Oklahoma Insurance Department Commissioner Glen Mulready, challenging the commissioner\u2019s stewardship of homeowners insurance rates and questioning the commissioner\u2019s claim that weather events and an existing competitive market justify ongoing inaction to curtail skyrocketing rates that have hobbled the budgets of Oklahoma families for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drummond\u2019s missive directly cited Oklahoma Watch\u2019s coverage of homeowners rates and the state laws that govern the regulation of property insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe unconscionably high insurance premiums cited in a recent Oklahoma Watch <a href=\"https:\/\/oklahomawatch.org\/2025\/07\/16\/oklahoma-has-nations-highest-average-homeowners-insurance-premiums\/\">article<\/a> cause my office grave concern that the State of Oklahoma is not adequately protecting its consumers,\u201d Drummond wrote. \u201cOklahomans should not have to bear these unwarranted costs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter specified that Oklahomans pay 2.5% of their home value on annual insurance premiums, four times the national average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January, Drummond<a href=\"https:\/\/drummondok.com\/drummond-announces-for-governor\/\"> announced<\/a> a campaign for governor; it\u2019s unclear whether the AG\u2019s bid for higher office will feature homeowners insurance as a significant platform position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rate-making in Oklahoma operates on a file-and-use regulatory framework, which means that insurance companies can raise rates and begin charging customers without prior approval from any regulatory body. over 50 are writing new policies, providing consumers with plenty of choices,\u201d Mulready said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oklahoma law lists a number of factors that may be used to determine whether a market is competitive; per statute, the commissioner may consider the total number of insurers, but no figure is specified in law to define either a competitive or noncompetitive market. On Oct. 7, in a question and answer session following Mulready\u2019s testimony at an interim study on homeowners insurance organized by Senate minority leader Julia Kirt, Rep.
