Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada and Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma, would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortezmasto.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/25.10.21_Tribal_Warrant_Fairness_Act_One_Pager.pdf\">allow<\/a> the U.S. Marshals Service to help tribal law enforcement find missing children. In tribal law enforcement\u2019s stead, the service would also be able to search for and arrest suspects with warrants. Under current law, the U.S. Marshals Service can assist local law enforcement but not tribal. Homicide rates of Native people were nearly five times higher than that of non-Hispanic white people, according to 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/injury-tribal\/media\/pdfs\/2025\/06\/Violence-Against-Native-Peoples-Fact-Sheet.pdf\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> data. More than 84% of Native women and girls have experienced violence in their lifetimes, according to a 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/nij.ojp.gov\/library\/publications\/violence-against-american-indian-and-alaska-native-women-and-men-2010-findings\">National Institute of Justice report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bureau of Indian Affairs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bia.gov\/service\/mmu\/missing-and-murdered-indigenous-people-crisis\">estimated<\/a> that more than 4,000 cases of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bia.gov\/service\/mmu\/missing-murdered-cases\">missing and murdered Native Americans<\/a> have gone unsolved. That is often due to a lack of investigative resources, the BIA said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mullin, a member of the Cherokee Nation who represents a state with 39 federally recognized tribes, said in the release that he is steadfast in his commitment to the safety and security of tribal communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Tribal Warrant Fairness Act is a commonsense solution to fill in the jurisdictional gaps and grant the United States Marshals Service authority to assist where needed with their unique capabilities,\u201d Mullin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The act is another step in Cortez Masto\u2019s response to a 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/priorities\/strengthening-indian-country\/not-invisible-act-commission\">commission report<\/a> that gave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/pressreleases\/not-invisible-act-commission-transmits-recommendations-federal-government-address\">recommendations<\/a> to lawmakers about how to alleviate the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous people. President Donald Trump signed a bill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortezmasto.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/cortez-masto-murkowski-hail-trump-signing-of-bills-to-curb-epidemic-of-missing-murdered-and-trafficked-native-women\/\">into law<\/a> in 2020, introduced by Cortez Masto and Alaska Sen.
